Greater Dandenong's 1.2 m front fence line
In the residential zones, Greater Dandenong draws the building permit line for a timber or steel front fence at 1.2 m on a council street, lower than the 1.5 m most neighbouring councils use. If you want a taller front fence for privacy or security, Jake can price the permit route or a design that stays under the line.
Long boundaries, straight runs
Blocks in Keysborough, Noble Park and Dandenong North tend to be bigger than in Oakleigh, with longer side boundaries. That suits a treated pine paling fence or Colorbond: both go up fast in long straight runs, and both keep their line if the posts are set properly.
City of Greater Dandenong fence rules.
- In the residential zones, a timber or steel front fence on a council street needs a building permit over 1.2 m, or over 1.5 m on a declared main road. Outside those zones the limit is 1.5 m.
- A masonry or concrete front fence needs a building permit over 1.2 m anywhere.
- On a corner, a street fence within 9 m of the intersection needs a building permit over 1 m.
- Side and rear boundary fences need a building permit over 2 m.
- A front fence includes any side fence within 3 m of the frontage. Screens count as fences, and height is measured from natural ground level.
- A building permit can't be issued until any planning permit needed has been granted.
- Council pays half the cost of a standard fence next to its parks and reserves, if three written quotes are approved before work starts.
