The fence most boundaries need

A paling fence is the standard Melbourne boundary. It gives full privacy, keeps dogs and kids in, and costs less than most other options. Done well, it stays straight for years.

Most of the difference between a good paling fence and a bad one is underground and out of sight. Post depth, concrete, and how level the rails run decide whether the fence leans in five years or stays put. That's the part we don't rush.

Styles and options

Butted palings
Palings fixed edge to edge. The simplest and lowest-cost option.
Lapped palings
Each paling overlaps the next, so no gaps open up as the timber dries and shrinks. Better privacy.
Lapped and capped
Lapped palings with a capping rail along the top. Protects the paling ends from weather and gives the fence a finished line.
Plinth boards
A board along the base that keeps the palings off the soil, holds back garden beds and stops pets digging under.
Exposed or hidden posts
Posts can sit on your side, the neighbour's side, or be capped over. Worth agreeing with the neighbour before the build.
Height
Most boundary fences are around 1.8 m. We can go higher or lower to suit the site and any council rules.

How we build it

Old fence out and taken away. String lines set. Posts set in concrete and checked for plumb. Rails fixed level, or stepped evenly on a slope. Palings fitted to a straight top line. Site cleaned before we leave.

Both sides get the same finish. The side your neighbour sees is built to the same standard as yours.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does a timber paling fence cost?

It depends on length, height, style, ground conditions, access and whether an old fence needs removing. Jake measures on site and sends a line-itemised quote the same night, so you know the full cost before anything starts.

Who pays for a boundary fence in Victoria?

Under Victoria's Fences Act 1968, neighbours usually share the cost of a standard dividing fence. Agree on the fence and the split in writing before work starts. If you want something above the standard, the extra cost is generally yours.

Can you remove the old fence?

Yes. Removing and disposing of the old fence can be included in the quote.

How long does a paling fence take to build?

Most residential boundary runs take a few days, including setting the posts. Jake gives you a start date and timeline with the quote.
